Gas cooker installation in Barnsley

Freestanding cookers, range cookers and built-in hobs, connected and signed off by a Gas Safe engineer. Joe measures the gas pressure at the cooker itself, not just whether the burners light.

Gas cooker installation in Barnsley typically costs around £60 to £150 in labour for a like-for-like freestanding cooker, going by national cost guides, with built-in hobs and anything that needs the gas point moving costing more. By law it has to be a Gas Safe registered engineer. Gas Safe Register is clear that someone unregistered fitting a cooker and getting a registered engineer to check it afterwards is not a way round that: both of them would be breaking the law.

Joe connects freestanding cookers, range cookers, dual fuel cookers and built-in gas hobs, registered under number 633652. Plugging a hose onto a bayonet takes a couple of minutes. Proving the cooker is safe takes longer, and that is the part you are really paying for.

What happens when Joe fits a cooker

  1. The gas point

The existing supply is checked first: whether it is in the right place for the new cooker, whether the pipe is big enough to feed it, and whether it is sound.

  2. Tightness test

Before the cooker goes on, and again once it is connected, the gas installation is checked for leaks, so an escape is caught on the day rather than smelt a week later.

  3. The connection

A freestanding cooker goes on a proper cooker hose, routed clear of anything hot and never pulled tight. The stability chain is fitted to the wall and kept shorter than the hose, so the chain takes the strain, never the gas connection.

  4. Pressure at the cooker

With every burner running, the working gas pressure is measured at the cooker's own test point. A reading that sags under full load means the supply is struggling.

  5. Every flame and safety device

Each burner is lit and its flame checked. Where the hob has flame failure devices, which most modern ones do, they are tested so that if a pan boils over and puts a flame out, the gas to that burner shuts off. Oven and grill too.

  6. Shown working

You see it all running before Joe leaves, and you pay once you have.

Hobs Joe has connected

  • Four-burner stainless gas hob newly fitted in a wood-effect worktop above sage green cabinets with brass handles
A new hob in a new kitchen, connected and tested.
  • Beko four-burner gas hob with blue flames on every burner, a stainless splashback behind and a built-in oven below
Every burner lit and checked for a clean blue flame.

Which kind of cooker are you fitting?

TypeHow it connectsWorth knowing
Freestanding cookerFlexible hose to a bayonet point on the wallNeeds a stability chain so it cannot tip forward with the oven door open
Built-in gas hobFixed connection under the worktopClearances to walls and any hood above come from the hob's own instructions
Range cookerUsually a hose to a bayonet, like a freestanding cookerBurns more gas at full tilt, so the supply pipe has to keep up
Dual fuel cookerGas to the hob, electricity to the ovenIf the oven needs its own cooker circuit, that is an electrician's job

Going electric or induction? The gas still has to be capped off

Taking a gas cooker out is gas work too. The supply has to be disconnected and sealed properly by a Gas Safe engineer, not left as an open bayonet behind the new appliance. If you are changing to induction as part of a kitchen refit, get the capping-off done on the same visit as any other gas work.

Planning a gas cooker installation in Barnsley with a new kitchen?

Get Joe in before the units go in, not after. If the hob or cooker is moving to a different wall, the gas pipe is far easier to run while the floor and walls are open, and the new point can sit exactly where the appliance needs it. The cooker itself is then connected last, once the worktops are down and the fitter has gone.

A kitchen refit usually means plumbing too, and Joe does general plumbing as well as gas. The plumber in Barnsley page covers the everyday water work. Joe works across Barnsley and the surrounding towns, so the same engineer can do the gas and the water on the same job.

If you ever smell gas in the kitchen, turn the cooker off, open the windows and ring the gas emergency line on 0800 111 999 before anything else. The emergency boiler repair page sets out what to do next.

Getting your cooker fitted

Text Joe the make and model of the cooker or hob and a photo of where it is going, or call him on 07791 793415. That is usually enough for a fixed price and a date. To see his registration for yourself, check us on the Gas Safe Register.

Before you book a cooker fitting

Can I connect the cooker myself and get it checked afterwards?

No. Gas Safe Register says that if someone who is not registered fits a gas appliance and a registered engineer then checks it, both of them have broken the law. The only parts of a gas cooker you can deal with yourself are the ones designed for you to change, such as a control knob.

How long does it take to fit a gas cooker?

A like-for-like freestanding cooker on an existing bayonet is usually an hour or two, including the testing. A built-in hob, a range cooker or a gas point that has to move takes longer, and Joe will tell you roughly how long when he prices it.

Do I need a new gas point for a range cooker?

Not always. If the existing point sits behind where the range will stand and the pipe feeding it is big enough, it can often be reused. A range with five or six burners can draw a lot more gas than the cooker it replaces, though, and an undersized pipe shows up as low pressure with everything running.

The flames on my hob are yellow and floppy. Is that a problem?

It can be. A healthy gas flame is crisp and blue. Lazy yellow or orange flames are one of the warning signs Gas Safe Register lists for an appliance that is not burning properly, which is how carbon monoxide gets made. Stop using that burner and get it looked at.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm for a gas cooker?

In a rented home the law does not require one for a gas cooker on its own, because cookers are exempt from the landlord alarm rules. In any home with gas, though, a carbon monoxide alarm is cheap and sensible, and Gas Safe Register recommends one.
