Emergency boiler repair in Barnsley

Answered day or night on 07791 793415. Joe will tell you what to do right now, and whether this genuinely needs someone out tonight.

Emergency boiler repair in Barnsley and across South Yorkshire, on 07791 793415. The phone is answered day and night by Joe, not by a call centre taking a message for someone else.

Here is the part nobody else puts on a page like this. Before he sets off, Joe will talk it through with you and tell you honestly whether it needs doing tonight. If it can safely wait until Monday morning, he will say so, and you keep the emergency rate in your pocket.

That costs him money on plenty of calls. It is also why people ring back.

Smell gas, or the CO alarm is going off? Do this first

Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Not Joe, not anyone else, that number first. Turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely. Open the windows and doors. Do not touch light switches or anything electrical, and do not use a phone inside the house. If a carbon monoxide alarm has gone off, get everybody outside first and ring from there. Joe can sort the repair once you are safe.

Is this actually an emergency?

Thirty seconds of checks before you ring

  • Look at the pressure gauge it wants to be somewhere around 1 to 1.5 bar cold. Near zero is very often the whole problem
  • Check the gas and electric are actually on a prepay meter that has run out at eleven at night accounts for more callouts than anyone admits
  • Check the thermostat flat batteries in a wireless stat look exactly like a dead boiler
  • Check the timer or programmer has not reset common after a power cut, and it puts everything back to factory times
  • Reset the boiler once, and only once if the fault comes straight back, stop. Resetting repeatedly past a real fault makes it worse and can make it dearer
  • In freezing weather, look at the white condensate pipe outside if it is frozen the boiler will lock out. A frozen pipe is the single most common cold-snap callout
  • Do not take the casing off there is nothing behind it you can safely touch, and it is illegal for anyone not Gas Safe registered to work on it

The frozen pipe, and what is behind it

  • Condensate trap removed from a boiler and held over a bucket, full of cloudy condensate
The condensate side of a boiler. When the pipe outside freezes, this is what cannot drain, and the boiler shuts itself down rather than run unsafely.

What happens when you ring

Joe picks up, or rings you straight back if he is under a floor somewhere.

You describe what it is doing. He will ask what the pressure gauge says, whether there is any hot water, whether anything is leaking, and what the display shows. Two minutes, usually.

Then he tells you one of three things: it can wait until the morning and here is what to do meanwhile, it needs looking at today, or he is setting off now. You get told the callout rate before he leaves, not when he is stood in your kitchen.

07791 793415. You can send a photo of the fault code to the same number on WhatsApp, which is often quicker than describing it.

Emergency boiler repair across Barnsley and South Yorkshire

Barnsley and the Dearne Valley first, because that is where Joe is based and where he can be with you quickest. Then Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Wakefield.

He will tell you honestly how long he is going to be rather than saying an hour and turning up at midnight. If he genuinely cannot get to you in a sensible time, he will say that too, so you can ring someone else instead of sitting waiting.

If it turns out the boiler is past saving rather than past fixing, that conversation happens in daylight, and a new boiler gets quoted properly rather than decided at two in the morning while you are cold and fed up.

Out-of-hours work is one man covering a wide patch, so first come is first served. Ringing early beats ringing at midnight when it has been off since teatime.

Questions people ask at the worst possible moment

Do you really answer at three in the morning?

It is a one man business, so it is Joe's own phone. Most of the time yes. If he is already out on a job or asleep through a single ring, leave a message or send a WhatsApp and he comes back to you rather than it disappearing into a call centre queue.

What does an emergency callout cost?

There is an out-of-hours rate, and you will be told the figure on the phone before Joe sets off. What you will not get is a surprise on the invoice. If the job can wait until normal hours he will tell you to wait, because charging a night rate for something that could have waited is how people end up not ringing back.

Can you fix it on the first visit?

Often, because the common parts for Ideal, Baxi and Worcester live in the van. Where a part has to come from a merchant, Joe will make the situation safe, get you whatever heat is possible in the meantime, and tell you exactly when he can be back.

I am renting. Can I ring you myself?

You can ring for advice at any hour and Joe will help you work out how urgent it is. Bear in mind the repair itself is your landlord's responsibility to arrange and pay for, so the practical route is usually to ring your landlord or agent and give them this number.

The boiler is still under warranty. Should I ring the manufacturer instead?

Usually yes, at least first. A warranty repair is free through the manufacturer, and bringing an independent engineer in can affect the cover. Ring their helpline, and if they cannot get to you for days and you are without heat, ring Joe and he will tell you what is safe to do in the meantime.
